I-10 Tourist Information Center and Rest Area

Anthony, New Mexico

State of New Mexico Department of Transportation

David Driapsa designed the rehabilitation of the I-10 tourist information center and rest area. Serving both as architect and landscape architect for the New Mexico Department of Transportation, David added a new wing of offices with a public lobby and a courtyard onto one side of the existing building. This design met the program requirements while preserving the historic character and use of the existing building. The Territorial style is characteristic of the local vernacular architecture and very adaptable to the Chihuahuan Desert environment. The courtyard with fountain provides an oasis for the traveling public and inviting forecourt to the lobby and offices.
